This study examines the concept of institutional digital repositories as one of the most prominent outcomes of digital transformation in academic and research institutions. The paper reviews the emergence and historical development of these repositories, leading to their adoption as a strategic tool for preserving and providing access to scientific and intellectual output. It also highlights the general concept of the digital repository and its main objectives, which include supporting open access, enhancing knowledge exchange, and preserving institutional intellectual production. The study further discusses its significance and advantages, such as ease of accessibility, ensuring content continuity, and increasing scientific impact. On the other hand, it examines the challenges facing these repositories, including funding issues, intellectual property rights, and quality assurance. Additionally, the study reviews commonly used software in their establishment, the essential requirements for their success, as well as the international standards adopted to ensure their efficiency and sustainability.
