Abstract

This research belongs to the field of Hadith criticism, specifically examining the critiques of Ibn Hazm al-Zahiri by al-Hafiz Abu al-Fadl al-Iraqi and his son Abu Zur'ah al-Iraqi. Ibn Hazm was a highly esteemed scholar in the Islamic sciences in general, and in Hadith studies in particular. However, no scholar is infallible. Ibn Hazm held certain views on Hadith that were subsequently critiqued by other scholars, who clarified and discussed them using the principles of Hadith methodology and established rules of verification. The researcher aims to study a portion of al-Iraqi and his son's critiques of Ibn Hazm, focusing on the rulings concerning authentication and weakening of Hadiths. The study begins by presenting the text of the Hadith under investigation, followed by Ibn Hazm's ruling on the Hadith, and then the critiques of al-Iraqi or his son. The research concludes with an analysis of these critiques, ultimately arriving at a conclusion based on the researcher's own reasoning.

This research aims to achieve several objectives, including:

  • Contributing to the verification of a portion of the Prophetic Sunnah and distinguishing its authentic from its weak narrations.
  • Highlighting aspects of the critical efforts of hadith scholars, and the discussions and intellectual debates they engaged in.
  • Demonstrating the hadith methodology and critical acumen of the two scholars, Abu al-Fadl al-Iraqi and his son Abu Zur'ah.
  • Reviving critical research among scholars and students, ensuring that the researcher's engagement with classical texts is not limited to mere transmission.
