Abstract

The "Absent Text" (al-nass al-gha’ib) is considered one of the most significant concepts in modern literary criticism and a fundamental artistic element in the structure of the poem. It functions by creatively incorporating literary and historical heritage into the poetic work. The Absent Text refers to the presence of prior texts, meanings, or contexts—whether alluded to or quoted—within the poetic discourse. These are bodies of knowledge, cultural frameworks, and historical contexts that the text assumes but does not explicitly state. By employing this technique, a poet imparts new layers of significance to the literary work, demonstrating a sophisticated ability to utilize cultural heritage, proverbs, myths, and other sources to enhance the aesthetic quality of the poetry. Furthermore, the Absent Text serves as an efficient tool for concision and persuasion, acting as a bridge between tradition and innovation. It synthesizes past and contemporary texts to generate new meanings, thereby reinforcing the moral and aesthetic value of the heritage. Crucially, the Absent Text transforms the reader into an active partner in the production of meaning. It relies on a "silent presence"—one that is not articulated directly but is instead decoded through context and implied by the "gaps" in the text. By operating on the principles of brevity and condensation, it requires the reader to complete the image and engage in the act of interpretation. Ultimately, the Absent Text is a mechanism that synthesizes originality and creativity, granting the poem expressive power and profound stylistic beauty while fostering the "pleasure of reception" through the deciphering of symbols and meanings.
