Abstract

This research addresses the phenomenon of intertextuality in Al-Mutanabbi's poetry through the analysis of selected verses. Intertextuality is a modern critical term that refers to the overlap between texts, as a later text relies on earlier texts. It is the repetition of a previous text in a renewed poetic form. The French researcher Julia Kristeva played a significant and significant role in formulating this term. Intertextuality is a stylistic and rhetorical phenomenon and one of the most prominent modern critical concepts that emerged in the context of the development of literary and linguistic studies. It refers to the relationship between texts when a text is in dialogue with other texts, previous or contemporary. A literary text is shaped through multiple intersections with others, where the new text appears influenced or benefited from. Thus, intertextuality reveals the poet's culture and knowledge, providing cognitive and aesthetic dimensions. It also helps in understanding the text by linking it to other contexts. A text is no longer understood in isolation or read as an independent unit, but rather within the intersection of textual relationships that endow it with new meanings and dimensions. This provides the reader with a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the literary text, expressing the phenomenon of the presence of other texts within it, and poetry. Arabic has been and still is a rich heritage throughout the ages, preserving its authenticity and aesthetic values. With the development of artistic tools and methods, the term intertextuality emerged, which poets use to enrich texts and add new dimensions to old meanings. This is to intensify the significance of the text and link it to heritage and human experience in terms of meaning, structure and interpretation. The text, in its depths and hidden aspects, contains references, influences and quotations from other texts, where it acquires new meanings and innovative semantic levels and presents a different vision through inclusion, allusion or opposition. It is one of the poet's tools to expand meaning and link it to cultural and intellectual dimensions, not repetition, but rather new creativity after formulating heritage with a contemporary vision. Al-Mutanabbi used intertextuality to build a unique poetic character that speaks on behalf of history and philosophy. Al-Mutanabbi is one of the poets who employed intertextuality with artistic, imaginative and intellectual awareness, and made his poetry texts rich with connotations and references to Arab and Islamic heritage.
