Imam ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd al-Khuraybī: His Contributions to Hadith Studies, His Critical and Educational Methodology, and His Jurisprudential School

Abstract

This study examines the scholarly legacy of Imam ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd al-Khuraybī (d. 213 AH/828 CE), highlighting his contributions to the sciences of Hadith, his critical and educational methodology, and the characteristics of his juristic orientation as reflected in his narrations and transmitted reports. The research employs inductive, analytical, and comparative methods by collecting relevant materials from the primary Hadith compilations, biographical dictionaries, and works on al-jarḥ wa al-taʿdīl (narrator criticism). The findings demonstrate that al-Khuraybī was among the leading Hadith authorities unanimously recognized for his reliability and precision. His critical methodology was distinguished by rigorous scrutiny, caution in transmitting Hadith, and strict standard for qualifying students before engaging in narration. The study further reveals that his juristic reasoning was firmly grounded in adherence to the textual sources and the methodology of the early Muslim generations (al-Salaf), while reflecting independent legal judgment in certaine issue. Moreover, his educational approach emphasized sincerity, moral discipline, humility, piety, and gentleness in teaching. The research also highlights the scholarly value of his narrations within the major Hadith collections and his significant role in shaping the Hadith tradition during the second Islamic century. It concludes by recommending further specialized studies on his narrations, critical methodology, and influence on subsequent generations of Hadith scholars.
